At PTL we pride ourselves on being personable. Meet Gavin Cowan.
What was your favourite subject at school? Worst?
Chemistry or Art I think, bit of an eclectic mix upon reflection. A good solid basis for Pensions. My worst subject was French.
Do you have a nickname?
Not that I’m aware of…
If you had to be classified as a member of a “generation” which would it be?
The Star Wars generation. I loved those films growing up.
What was the first record that you bought?
My first album was The Final Countdown by Europe. I still remember those dodgy perms.
What was the last concert you went to?
The Charlatans some years ago. I recently went to see the play Of Mice and Men in Leeds which was superb.
What did you want to be when you were at school?
Footballer, like 99.9% of all other lads that age.
What was your first job?
My first proper job was an apprentice mechanical engineer at British Steel. Getting up at 5.30am and getting home at 6.30pm for £29.50 a week. Bad times!
How did you start in the pensions profession?
What is your favourite book and film?
Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger, classic. The film would have to be one of the following: Life Is Beautiful, Lord of the Rings, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest or Full Metal Jacket.
Do you support a sporting team?
Many. My main love is United (Manchester, of course).
What adjectives would your colleagues use to describe you?
Determined & friendly.
What aspect of pensions legislation or provision would you change if you could?
Who is the most irritating person in the industry or public eye?
Anybody associated with reality TV shows.
Who is the most influential person in the pensions industry?
Should saving into a pension be compulsory?
No, I don’t think so.
Pension or ISA?
What is your worst habit?
Not being able to find things. Not sure if this is a man thing or the start of an age thing?
When was the last time you lost your temper?
This morning when I remembered I had to complete this. Only kidding, I try and vent all my anger on the punch bag at the gym so I’d like to think I’m fairly relaxed most of the time.
What was the last “bargain” you got?
Clothes on my travels to India.
What is your favourite meal and drink?
Too hard to choose.
What is the biggest bet you ever placed and did you win?
I’m not really a gambling man.
Who would be your ideal dinner guest?
What was the last country you visited?
How do you plan to spend your retirement years?
Congratulations, you’ve won the lottery. What next?
I’d love to travel the world.
